#Filming in Grantchester

James Norton in ‘Grantchester’.

Ah…the village of Grantchester was buzzing last week as filming continued on the tv series of the same name.  A village no longer simply famous for Rupert Brooke writing those words  “…and is there honey still for tea?” reminding us of the trauma and wasted lives of the First World War – Brooke has been temporarily usurped in Grantchester’s book of fame by James Norton, playing a character very much alive if emotionally scarred by the Second World War.

I was a trifle pleased to learn from Cambridge market management that the ‘Grantchester’ production team would be shooting a scene in Cambridge market.  James Norton trouncing past our stalls complete with rippling muscles would brighten my day.  I watched the preparation one afternoon as a couple from the production team paced around the market muttering stuff like “and Geordie will run through here…” which I hoped would be swiftly followed by “…with Sydney hot on his heels.”

It wasn’t to be.  As a friend pointed out, we would have to be dressed in period outfits selling period produce and even I could see the complication of that on a busy Tuesday afternoon.  Having a film editor for a husband I really should have known better.

Ah well, I’ll just have to wait for the series.  Meanwhile to Grantchester for tea and honey.

…..Deep meadows yet, for to forget
The lies, and truths, and pain? …oh! Yet
Stands the Church clock at ten to three?
And is there honey still for tea?
